TASKFORCE MEETINGS

Taskforce on Innovative International Financing for Health Systems has met on three occasions.


The Taskforce’s inaugural meeting was held on 1 December in Doha. Douglas Alexander, UK Secretary of State for Development co-chaired the meeting with World Bank Vice-President for Human Development, Joy Phumaphi. At this meeting the Taskforce agreed to submit a report to the G8 summit in 2009. The report will recommend a mix of innovative international financing mechanisms to mobilize the extra resources required to achieve the health Millennium Development Goals.

The Taskforce’s second meeting was held in London on 13 March 2009 and chaired by UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, at Downing Street. At this meeting the Taskforce heard the reports of the two independent Working Groups established to advise the Taskforce on the constraints and costs of the funding gap and the mechanisms for raising and channelling the funds.

The third meeting of the Taskforce was held in Paris on 29 May 2009 and chaired by Bernard Kouchner, French Foreign Minister. At this meeting the Taskforce agreed on a range of innovative financing mechanisms that stakeholders and other countries could chose to support.
