(2002) The Monterrey Consensus on Financing for Development:

The Monterrey Consensus was agreed by heads of State and Governments in March 2002. The Consensus aims to eradicate poverty, achieve sustained economic growth and promote sustainable development by addressing financing requirements for sustainable poverty reduction in developing countries and by recognizing that developing countries are the driving force for their own growth and development.

The Monterrey Consensus establishes a framework of mutual accountability that requires:

  • Developing Countries to adopt sound economic and social policies that will help mobilize resources from all sources.
  • Developed Countries to support these efforts through an open trading system, private capital flows and additional development assistance.
