New Signatories to IHP+: Guinea Bissau, Haiti and USAID
Three new partners signed the IHP+ Global Compact on 21st May 2013, at the World Health Organization Director-General’s office in Geneva, during the 66th World Health Assembly.
IHP+ welcomed three new partners - Guinea Bissau, Haiti, and USAID - on 21 May 2013, in a ceremony during the 66th World Health Assembly, prior to the IHP+ Technical Briefing. The Ministers of Health of Guinea Bissau and Haiti, together with the Assistant Administrator of USAID, signed the IHP+ Global Compact in the presence of Dr Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, and Dr Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank.
The Minister of Health from Guinea Bissau, Dr Agostinho Ca, said of the occasion, “It is a great privilege to sign the Global Compact. Guinea Bissau is a small country with lots of problems in the health sector. We cannot solve these problems on our own and we need partners to work with us. We hope the IHP+ will support this.”
Ariel Pablos-Mendez, Assistant Administrator for Global Health at USAID said, “We are delighted to join IHP+ and we are committed to strengthening partnerships. Coordination needs to do better, and we also need to engage the private sector with IHP+ processes.”
The Global Compact represents partners’ formal commitment to put into practice in the health sector the principles on development effectiveness agreed in the Paris and Busan Declarations : national ownership, alignment with national systems, harmonization between agencies, management for results, and mutual accountability.
The new signatories bring the total number of IHP+ partners to 59: 33 countries, and 26 development partners.
